Tutoring
in Reading using the Barton Reading Program
*please
note this program does not have a set time - you arrange a time with
the tutor for 1:1 work*
I
am offering tutoring in reading using the Barton Reading Program.
The Barton Reading Program is a teaching method created for students
with dyslexia. The Barton reading system not only can be used on
dyslexic and struggling readers but on students learning to read as
well. It is a reading program that is based on the highly structured
Orton–Gillingham approach which is one of the few learning methods
approved with most teachers of student with. The Orton-Gillingham
teaching method creates a sequential system that builds on itself in
an almost 3-dimensional way. It must show how sounds and letters are
related and how they act in words; it must also show how to attack a
word and break it into smaller pieces. And it is a multi-sensory
approach, as dyslexic people learn best by involving all of their
senses: visual, auditory, tactile, and kinesthetic. For further
information, you can go to the Barton website at
www.bartonreading.com.
The
Barton program works with individual students so these tutoring
sessions will be one on one. This way each student will work at his
or her own pace. I will be starting each student on Level 1. We can
arrange a time that would work in your child’s schedule during
co-op. I have seen great progress with my own son in using this
program!
Since
I am working toward getting certified as a tutor, I am charging a
discount rate of $10 / hour for each session, which will be prorated
to $7.50 since the classes are only 45 minutes long. Many tutors
charge between $20 to $25 / hour for sessions.

Picturing
America - 5th-8th grade Art
Picturing
America is a curriculum using art to study and understand America’s
history and founding principles. The Picturing America project shows
different people and places, America’s struggles and triumphs using
some of America’s greatest masterpieces from some of our nation’s
most significant artists.
This
class will be mostly looking at different pieces of American artwork
along with the history of what America was going through at the time.
They will be learning how to look at different aspects of art and
what the artist may have been trying to convey. There will be one
project/presentation due at the end of the semester and students can
use their own supplies for this project. No extra supplies need be
bought for this class.
If
you are interested or have any questions, please feel free to email
me at toepkemail@yahoo.com

Text
Exploring
Creation with Botany,
by Jeannie K. Fulbright
I
purchased my text from Christianbook.com for $27.49 with free
shipping.
Students
will complete the text reading and projects that will become part of
two lapbooks they will create to store their knowledge. Friday co-op
classes will review the information from the assigned reading and
allow students time to share and work on their projects. Lab
activities will be provided and completed during class. In addition,
we will explore “Trees of Illinois” learning kit from the library
and offer a field trip to the botanical garden in St. Louis. The
text suggests dividing the 13 lessons into 2-week segments. Some
lessons are shorter, and some are longer. We’ll explore each
lesson as the interest of the students dictates. I expect the course
to last 2 semesters.
The
class is designed to fulfill a science course for the school year.
If you choose a different science curriculum for your student, you
are not required to purchase the text. I would welcome students who
are interested in participating in lab activities with a group.
Class
fee is $25 per semester. Lab and notebooking materials are
included. Students should bring a pencil, glue stick, colored
pencils and/or markers, and scissors each week, as well as their
textbook if you purchase one. I will provide a variety of creative
materials as well, but it’s nice to have some of your own.

Literature
for Grades 1-4
We
will be exploring literature in the theme of “horses” to begin
our semester. Literature will be shared as a group during class.
Students will be encouraged to read and share their own books they
are reading in this theme. These can be books they own, or books they
check out from the library. We will also read a group book that I
will obtain through the library. Since there is a wide range in
reading levels in this group, the parent may have to help with weekly
assignments at times. We will document what we are learning about
our theme in a lapbook or notebook. The student will decide how they
wish to collect their information. I plan for this theme to last 4-6
weeks, then the class will determine a theme we will explore the 2nd
half of the semester.
Class fee is $25 per semester. Notebooking materials are included. Students will need to obtain one or more books from the library or home to read. I will provide a list of suggestions. Students should bring a pencil, glue stick, colored pencils and/or markers, and scissors each week. I will provide a variety of creative materials as well, but it’s nice to have some of your own.

Literature
for Grades 5-8
We
will be exploring literature in the theme of “slavery” and the
“underground railroad”. I will be utilizing a learning kit from
the library entitled “Slavery in Illinois”. I am just exploring
all the materials available to us. I’m so excited to learn
alongside the students who join this class. Students will be
choosing historical fiction and biographies in our theme and sharing
what they learn with their classmates. Students will document their
findings in a journal. Additional learning kits in the themes of
“Abraham Lincoln”, “Mary Todd Lincoln”, and “The Civil War”
are available for our use. If we enjoy using them, we will continue
this historical theme as the class is interested. Independent
reading and some group selections will be utilized. I will obtain
the group books through interlibrary loan. We would also enjoy a
field trip to the Lincoln museum in Springfield to reinforce and
expand what we are learning in our literature study.
The
class will choose another theme or genre to explore 2nd
semester.
Class
fee is $25 per semester. Journaling materials are included.
Students will need to obtain one or more books from the library or
home to read. I will provide a list of suggestions. Students should
bring a pencil, glue stick, colored pencils and/or markers, and
